Mega-gorgeous HSM star Zac Efron is sitting across from me! The 22-year-old and I are kickin’ it at the beach in Marina, Del Rey, Ca. where he has agreed to tell us all about his new romantic drama film “Charlie St. Cloud” in which he plays a small-town hero who withdraws from life when his little brother dies. We are learning what Zac likes about his leading lady Amanda Crew, how he dealt with his most embarrassing fan encounter moment on the streets of L.A., where he, Vanessa and pals would love to sail (now that he’s learned how for the film) and how he’s changed since we first met him in 2005!

Zac’s “Charlie” director has only praise for his hard-working young star and reminded us that, for the film “17 Again,” Zac practiced spinning a basketball and passing it to the tips of his fingers, until those fingers bled! This is one dedicated actor. He was just as determined to learn to sail like a pro for “Charlie”. Sitting down with Zac to get the latest, we went all retro and handed him a digital pic we took of him in 2005 before HSM ever came out. He was 16.

I took this of you in 2005 at a ‘meet and greet’ for young stars of tomorrow. You had finished HSM but it hadn’t even been on TV yet. You were sitting there alone. I decided to come over and talk to this cute young guy and you told me all about ‘High School Musical’.
Zac: Oh Wow! [he laughs] That’s so funny! That’s very cool! [I hand him the picture and he keeps looking at it].

Who were you then? Who are you now? And what do you miss about the teen in that picture?
Zac: Oh man! [looking at the picture] I think right there it was just the naiveté. There was always a ‘best case scenario’ that was next and you were pointed in the right direction and you would either get that project or you wouldn’t. It was very simple at that time.

And now?
Zac: Now, I’m being privy to so much more information and being behind the scenes of a lot of stuff, it’s become more of a full-time job for me. I think here [at age 16], not to say it was less work but, look at me! I don’t have a care in the world here [we laugh]. Now I’m running my own ship more. Then I was waiting for that big surprise and I was still in high school. That’s one thing that’s been great is I’m not having to wake up early for class all the time.

In PARADE’s July 25 cover story with “Charlie St. Cloud” star Zac Efron, the 22-year-old actor gives an inside look into how he spends his summers and opens up about his “partner in crime” Vanessa Hudgens. In these exclusive extras, Efron talks about leaving his teen-idol phase behind for his latest role as a young man torn between mourning the loss of his brother and moving on with his life. Plus, what he misses most about his high school days and how he came to be known as a “floater.”

What attracted him to such a sobering role.
“Every once in awhile, you read a script and you get that special feeling in your gut. I was touched by what the character, Charlie, goes through, and I thought it was a story worth sharing. And the fact that I have a little brother myself gave it a lot of resonance.”

Taking a break to spend some much-needed time with his brother.
“[I] kicked off the summer by taking my little brother, Dylan, on a graduation trip to Hawaii. He’s going off to college next year, and I’ve been working very hard, so we haven’t been able to see each other as much as we would have liked to in the past few years. We hiked through the inner jungle in Maui, and you come across these really beautiful spots. We found this hidden place where there was an enormous waterfall and cliff jump. It was about a thirty-five foot drop.”

Taking the plunge.
“Once you’ve done it, the funny part is trying to convince someone else to jump off, too. I’m the one who’s always saying, ‘Go for it, go for it – jump!’ And then when you come up out of the water, you feel fantastic.”

On his performance in “Me and Orson Welles,” featuring a distinguished cast of older English actors.
“It was pretty intimidating at first. So I really had to convince myself that I had the right to be there. But that’s where the rush is. You say, ‘Can I really do this? Can I pull it off?’ The fun part of acting is testing your limits in every way, constantly throwing everything against the wall and seeing what sticks. But since you never know how it’s gonna wind up, it’s a lot like gambling.”

His dad works as an engineer at a power plant, although Zac confesses that he’s not quite sure what he does.
“I’m not exactly sure what he’s in charge of. He’s kind of top secret about it; he could in fact be a spy and be lying to me about the whole thing.”

Now in its 11th year, the festival starts its five-day run Wednesday with a tribute to young actor Zac Efron and the Hawaii premiere of “Bran Nue Dae,” an Australian film that blends Broadway-style musical comedy, Aboriginal culture and Roman Catholic ritual. The festival lineup features 40 films that showcase “compassionate filmmakers,” according to Barry Rivers.

“I enjoy presenting cinema that enlightens people and exposes them to infinite possibilities rather than directs them to yet another dark cesspool of culture,” he said. “I use different terms to describe it. Smart with heart. Stuff, not fluff. Movies that matter.”

What that means is films without car chases, huge special effects and women in peril, he said.
