Zac Efron has seamlessly made the transition to more adult roles, in a way that most younger actors only dream of. Following his work in the three High School Musical films, he has gone on to do both comedy and drama, with films like Hairspray, 17 Again and Me and Orson Welles. Now, he is playing his most vulnerable and emotional role yet, in Charlie St. Cloud.
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name, Charlie St. Cloud tells the story of a small-town hero who survives a tragic accident, only to find out that his life has been changed forever. When Charlie (Efron) realizes that he can still see his younger brother Sam (Charlie Tahan), even though he’s dead, he vows to keep his promise to him and meet him every afternoon for baseball practice. And then, when his high school classmate Tess (Amanda Crew) returns home and sparks his interest, he becomes increasingly torn between his promise to his brother and his feelings for someone who is still very much alive.
During an interview to promote the film, Zac Efron talked about defining this character, working with director Burr Steers and striving for diversity in his film career. He also discussed his production company, Ninjas Runnin’ Wild, and the possible film slate that he’s hoping for. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
Since you were the one who actually got Burr Steers the directing job, why did you decide that you wanted to work with him again? Zac: I didn’t so much get Burr the job. Burr called me and said, “Are you serious about this ‘cause I’m in,” and I was like, “All right, let’s do it.” He really responded to it, and that was exciting to me. I was stoked. I knew this was so much more in Burr’s wheelhouse than 17Again, and I just knew we’d be lucky to have him involved.
There are lots of movies about man-children, but Burr always makes movies about boys who have the weight of the world on their shoulders. What was he like to work with, and how does he get that mature performance out of you? Zac: He’s very generous with the actors. It’s funny because Burr is rare to give a camera note or anything like that, but guaranteed, every take, he’d running over to us and have so much to say, or an opinion, or a new point of view, or something to think about. I enjoy that much attention from your director. I think it’s great when they’re not worried about the other stuff and they really care about your performance. He’s so performance-oriented, really deep down.
How did you define the way this character interacts throughout most of the movie, since the two most important relationships are, essentially, imaginary? Zac: When Sam comes back, that’s when Charlie really is living. That’s what he looks forward to, and that’s when he has the most fun. If you have a ghost of somebody coming back and you make it sad, that would just be, “Oh, man.” Instead, we have the most fun in those scenes.

Zac Efron and Charlie Tahan mimick the way they crashed into each other on the waters in this new interview from Moviefone. While Zac, 22, shared that during his first sailing lesson he learned how to capsize, Charlie shared, “I fell in a couple of times.” Zac added, “We did crash into each other on the waters — in different boats.”

Just days before the release of Zac Efron’s latest film, “Charlie St. Cloud,” the “High School Musical” actor reportedly is in talks to join the cast of another potential blockbuster.
New York magazine’s Vulture blog reports that the 22-year-old may star in “The Lucky One,” the film adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel about an American marine who credits his survival in the Iraq War to a photograph of a woman he’s never met. Back in North Carolina after three tours abroad, he sets out to meet her. Scott Hicks (“No Reservations”) will direct, and Doug McGrath and Will Fetters, who penned the script for the Robert Pattinson vehicle “Remember Me,” are adapting the book for the screen.
Sparks’ novels have become coveted Hollywood material, and film adaptations of his books include “Message in a Bottle,” “The Notebook,” “Nights in Rodanthe” and this year’s “Dear John.” If Efron stars in “The Lucky One,” he would join a high-profile collection of actors who have appeared in Nicholas Sparks movies, including Kevin Costner, Ryan Gosling, Richard Gere and Channing Tatum.
Efron reportedly is also close to signing on for a starring role in “Die in a Gunfight,” according to Deadline New York. A “Romeo and Juliet”-style dramatic romance, the film would have Efron playing a New York City kid who falls in love with the daughter of his father’s enemy.
Meanwhile, Efron continues to seek projects for himself through his Ninjas Runnin’ Wild production company. Among his movies in development are a workplace comedy with his “17 Again” production team, a time-travel tale called “Einstein Theory” and “Art of the Steal,” based on a Wired magazine article about a master thief.

Zac Efron may have one flick hoping to take to the box office this weekend (Charlie St. Cloud), but there’s another one on the horizon – Fire!
The 22-year-old actor opened up to MTV about the film: “Brian Bendis is writing a script right now. I don’t know when we are getting a draft exactly. But I know that he’s having a blast and Brian is one of my favorite writers. I’m really looking forward to that, we’ll see what happens.”
In the movie, Zac will be playing Ben, a college student recruited by the CIA who later discovers he’s been marked for termination by his employers.
He shared about playing a character like Ben, “You know the character, he’s not afraid. You know me in life I have a lot of rules. There is a lot of stuff I can’t do because I would never want to take those risks so to speak. As much as I’m a thrill-seeker, I don’t really get into fights,” he explained. “I’m not a renegade kind of guy. And that’s what this character is. I’m definitely going to live vicariously through this character and experience things I can’t do in real life.”
New HQ candids have been added to the gallery of Zac on July 26, 2010. A huge thanks to Nessie at F-S.org for donating these photos to zefronpictures.net.
Mega-gorgeous HSM star Zac Efron is sitting across from me! The 22-year-old and I are kickin’ it at the beach in Marina, Del Rey, Ca. where he has agreed to tell us all about his new romantic drama film “Charlie St. Cloud” in which he plays a small-town hero who withdraws from life when his little brother dies. We are learning what Zac likes about his leading lady Amanda Crew, how he dealt with his most embarrassing fan encounter moment on the streets of L.A., where he, Vanessa and pals would love to sail (now that he’s learned how for the film) and how he’s changed since we first met him in 2005!
Zac’s “Charlie” director has only praise for his hard-working young star and reminded us that, for the film “17 Again,” Zac practiced spinning a basketball and passing it to the tips of his fingers, until those fingers bled! This is one dedicated actor. He was just as determined to learn to sail like a pro for “Charlie”. Sitting down with Zac to get the latest, we went all retro and handed him a digital pic we took of him in 2005 before HSM ever came out. He was 16.
I took this of you in 2005 at a ‘meet and greet’ for young stars of tomorrow. You had finished HSM but it hadn’t even been on TV yet. You were sitting there alone. I decided to come over and talk to this cute young guy and you told me all about ‘High School Musical’. Zac: Oh Wow! [he laughs] That’s so funny! That’s very cool! [I hand him the picture and he keeps looking at it].
Who were you then? Who are you now? And what do you miss about the teen in that picture? Zac: Oh man! [looking at the picture] I think right there it was just the naiveté. There was always a ‘best case scenario’ that was next and you were pointed in the right direction and you would either get that project or you wouldn’t. It was very simple at that time.
And now? Zac: Now, I’m being privy to so much more information and being behind the scenes of a lot of stuff, it’s become more of a full-time job for me. I think here [at age 16], not to say it was less work but, look at me! I don’t have a care in the world here [we laugh]. Now I’m running my own ship more. Then I was waiting for that big surprise and I was still in high school. That’s one thing that’s been great is I’m not having to wake up early for class all the time.

Teen heartthrob Zac Efron announced on Tuesday’s episode of “The Tonight with Jay Leno” that he plans to take snowboarding lessons from none other than Shaun White. Efron presented White with his award for Best Male U.S. Olympic Athlete at the 2010 ESPY Awards last week, and has expressed an admiration for the Olympic gold medalist.
“I actually got Shaun’s number and I’m going to try to go snowboarding with him,” Efron told Leno. “He’s great. He’s someone from my generation that I really look up to. When he pulled those stunts at the Olympics, that was insane.”
Efron stars in the upcoming film “Charlie St. Cloud.” No word yet on when or where the rendezvous would take place.

The American actor, singer and dancer, Zac Efron has revealed that he angered the movie bosses last year when he bungee jumped off a bridge in Vancouver, Canada. The famous former “High School Musical” movie star turned daredevil for the day during a break from filming a new movie “Charlie St. Cloud.”
“You’re actually not allowed to do it. I got in really big trouble. In your contract you’re not supposed to do it. It was a lapse of judgement. Believe me, I could have been reamed. I probably shouldn’t have gone. We decided at two in the morning the night before,” he had stated.
He admits that he had signed up for the activity on a whim and later found himself in trouble with the superiors.

Rumours are circulating that Zac Efron may bag the role of Kurt Cobain. The original rumours claimed that “Twilight” actor Robert Pattinson, 24, was lined up for the role of Kurt in the biopic about the Nirvana front-man’s life, although these rumours were soon halted by widow Courtney Love and then by Rob himself.
Well now stories are circulating that Zac, 22, may bag the role. We all know that he can sing (even if it was in “High School Musical” and not a grunge band) and he may be a little easier to make look like Kurt, where as with Pattinson it may be a bit harder.
Vanessa Hudgens isn’t the jealous type… at least not when it comes to her man Zac Efron puckering up to other women in movies. At the premiere of his new movie “Charlie St. Cloud” last night, V swore she wasn’t bothered by his spit swapping scenes.
“I took myself out of it and just watched it like anyone else would,” Vanessa told E! News nonchalantly.
She’s more concerned with where her famous boyfriend will be sitting when she makes her debut as Mimi in “Rent” at the Hollywood Bowl…
“Wherever they put him! I don’t wanna know where they put him. I’ll be distracted!”
As for Zac, he tells E! News that having his girlfriend at the premiere helps him relax. “She’s just calming my nerves and saying she’s so proud,” he confessed. “It really means a lot to me!”
And no matter where he sits for Vanessa’s musical theater debut, there’s no doubt he’ll be in the house. “I wouldn’t miss that for the world!” he told us.
Non-profit organization To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) will host a free advance screening of Universal Pictures’ “Charlie St. Cloud,” starring Zac Efron, on Wednesday July 28, in Melbourne, FL, it was announced today. The special screening will be held for TWLOHA supporters before the film opens nationwide on July 30.
TWLOHA has created an evening that will share hope, help and community. “We want our supporters to feel celebrated and special,” said TWLOHA founder and Melbourne Beach native Jamie Tworkowski. “We want to give them a taste of what a film premiere is like, and we love that we’re able to make this happen in Melbourne.”
“Charlie St. Cloud” deals with letting go and starting over, themes related to TWLOHA’s mission of presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. As it does at its annual HEAVY AND LIGHT event in Orlando, TWLOHA plans to give every attendee information that points to local counseling and treatment resources. In addition, there will be speakers, TWLOHA merchandise available and a chance to meet the TWLOHA Team.
Reserve your tickets by emailing charlie@twloha.com with the name of each person in your party. An adult must accompany children under 13. Tickets may be picked up the day of the movie. You will need ID to pick up your tickets. If tickets are not picked up by 7PM, tickets will be given out on a first come-first serve basis.
If Zac Efron had a cold on Monday, as opposed to allergies, he probably passed it along to some fans at Bloomington’s Mall of America. The way that mostly female crowd, estimated at 7,000, screamed, they’d gladly share germs from Efron, who was here to promote his movie “Charlie St. Cloud.” Only 100 to 200 fans actually got to meet Efron at the event sponsored by KDWB-FM. The chosen few got autographs plus a handshake or a hug, depending on their druthers.
Fans of the “High School Musical” heartthrob, who kept wiping his nose and eyes with his hand, were on all levels, down main corridors (roped off in places where they could not possibly have gotten a glimpse of Efron) and in new areas where there is usually no need to pool crowds.
Efron seemed awed by the scene. And he should have been. MOA spokeswoman Erica Dao checked the records and reported that Efron’s “High School Musical” co-star and girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens attracted an estimated 4,000 while former Gov. Sarah Palin’s crowd was estimated at 3,000.
Efron was late to the signing. According to a KDWB staffer, who may have been joking, Efron stopped at a convenience store to eat a hot dog.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are finally opening up about the disappointment of their new flick’s release dates. Since the announcement of the new release date for “Beastly,” fans weren’t the only ones who were let down.
Zac, 22, shared with MTV, “It was disappointing. It was hard. I actually had to break the news to her. I was like, ‘I think we are moving on to your date.’ She took it really well, but it’s hard when that kind of stuff happens. We don’t, as actors, have any control over it, so we’ll see. I mean, hopefully it will work out for the best. ‘Beastly’ is a great movie, and when it does come out, people are absolutely going to love it.”
Vanessa, 21, added, “I just didn’t feel right about us having movies coming out on the same day. It’s just not right. We’re actually going to be doing some re-shoots and changing it up a bit, so hopefully we’ll make it that much better.”
“Charlie St. Cloud” hits theaters next Friday, July 30th.
Zac Efron has responded to Miley Cyrus’s recent admission that she would have posters of him on her walls if they were not friends. The “Hannah Montana” star previously told Access Hollywood that Efron held a “special place” in her heart.
“I am obsessed with Zac Efron. If it wouldn’t be creepy because he’s a friend, I would have posters on my wall,” she joked.
During a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Efron was played a video clip of Cyrus’s interview and asked for his response.
“That’s so funny! I don’t even know what to say to that,” he said. “She’s really sweet. I’ve known Miley for a really long time. I’ve known her since she was a little girl. It’s amazing what she’s done. She’s blossomed into this beautiful lady now and taken the world by storm. I’m so proud of her.”
